Fall 1988
SCC Environmental Club was founded

Spring 1990
Smith Island Cleanup Project with Army Corps of Engineers
Forest Restoration Project begins; approximately 1,000 trees planted

Fall 1990 to Fall 1997
Continued Forest Restoration Project, planting approximately 1,000 trees each spring and doing restoration cleanup work each fall

Fall 1993
Published newsletter summarizing Quad-City area environmental activities, and sent it to the local environmental groups

Spring 1994
Established a tallgrass prairie plot on campus.
Began regular maintenance of nature trail
Mounted bird and bat boxes and filled bird feeders.

Fall 1994
Environmentalist and author Dan Chiras lectured on campus.

Spring 1996
Field trip to the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. tarted hosta planting on campus to reduce herbicide use.

Assisted maintenance with planting; continued hosta plantings

Field trip to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge at Prairie City on April 25, 1998
First club website developed and posted at SCC

  Trip to the Beaverhead National Forest near Dillon, Montana; worked withWildlands Center for Preventing Roads and the Bitteroot Coalition on illegal ATV use and other issues.

Trip to Montana to work on the Corridor Education Project:  toured Crow Indian Reservation, Crazy Mountains and Beaverhead National Forest.

Trip to Montana to work on the Corridor Education Project: aimed at reducing roadkill on I-15 near Dillon, Montana

Spring 2007

Helped with the Putnam Museum's IMAX presentation of Kenny Salwey's film:  Mississippi:  Tales of the Last River Rat.  Mr. Salwey also spoke and signed books

Assisted the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center with their Volunteer Stewardship Workday. This event was in cooperation with the Waste Commission of Scott County/Keep America Beautiful

 The club volunteered at the Quad Cities Earth Week Coalition's fourth annual Earth Week Fair at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island.

Removed sod from large sections in back of the campus to add to our prairie restoration project.

River/Roadside Cleanup

Fall 2007

Partnered with Phi Theta Kappa to pick up trash from the campus grounds.

Began regularly attending meetings of the Quad Cities Earth Week Coalition.

Trail maintenance, placed wood chips on paths in campus trail system; worked on fixing the bridges.

Attended local Farmers' Markets to become more aware of the locally-grown and organic foods sold in the area.

Welcomed Wapsi River Environmental Education Center naturalist Mike Granger as a guest speaker for one of our meetings. He gave a presentation on furbearing mammals in Iowa.

Volunteered at Quad City Arts' Festival of Trees.

Attended EICCD Chancellor's Initiative on Sustainability Retreat.

Added new bird feeders and increased the frequency of monitoring and maintenance.

Welcomed Wapsi River Environmental Education Center director Dave Murcia as a guest speaker. He gave an interesting and informative presentation about careers in the environmental field.

Welcomed Todd Trammell, director of ATEEC (Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center), located at the Belmont Campus as a guest speaker for one of our meetings. He gave a short presentation about what his organization does.
ATEEC is a national center that promotes and supports environmental technology education to address the needs of the national and global workforce.

Spring 2008

Held campus cleanups.

Attended local Farmers' Markets to become more aware of the locally-grown
and organic foods sold in the area.

Continued attending meetings of the Quad Cities Earth Week Coalition.

Continued work on bridges in trail system.

Created and staffed a booth at the Earth Week Fair at the QCCA Expo Center.

Planted a serviceberry tree near the prairie/trail edge.

Hung and and maintained a dozen bird feeders on the campus grounds. 

Fall 2008

Sold candy bars as fundraisers.

Held campus cleanups.

Attended local Farmers' Markets to become more aware of the locally-grown
and organic foods sold in the area.

Continued work on bridges in trail system.

Held a pizza party at Old Chicago with Clean Sphere, the environmental club at Black Hawk College,
to discuss possible future partnership endeavors.

Spring 2009

Started a Facebook Page for the Trails Committee

Continued trail maintenance and improvement projects.

Put up a "green board" at the college to keep people informed about environmental happenings.

"Traded" representatives between our meetings and Clean Sphere's meetings.

Attended the Under the Sea 3-D movie at the IMAX.

Participated in the SCC Belmont Campus' Solid Waste Audit.

Participated in Living Lands and Waters' Alternative Spring Break, helping to clean up Cedar Rapids flood damage.

Packaged tree seedlings for Living Lands and Waters'  Million Trees Project.

Attended the Sierra Club's Environmental Film Fest.

Participated in the Quad-Cities' garlic mustard pull.

Designed and sold SCC Environmental Club t-shirts.

Held a bake sale which also included the t-shirts and environmental bumper stickers.

 SCC Environmental Club and Student Government sponsored a video-teleconference in Room 1501 on Environmental Issues with Andrea and Doug Peacock
