The SCC Environmental Club was founded in 1988 by Mark Aronson, an ecologist and full-time faculty member at the college.  The club is a grassroots group of student activists working on local, state, regional, national and international environmental issues.  The club encourages student participation and development of personal approaches to environmental activism and advocacy.

Edward Abbey wrote, “the love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach -- it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need -- if only we had the eyes to see.” The SCC Environmental Club promotes the concept of wilderness and the importance and reality of wilderness in our everyday lives. The SCC Environmental Club follows the advice of Doug Peacock to environmental activists, “Start in your own backyard.”
